Thanks everyone for your support of the Quilt on a Mission! The quilt raffle brought in almost $1,200!! I am just beyond excited about that. I had an even higher goal, but all of life contains lessons to learn!

Now, my quilt is in yet another scrap quilt contest, but I tell you, there are some real beauties on there. Go and vote at Quilting Gallery.

Arkansas Crossroads Block

While looking here I found the pattern for my next totally scrappy quilt from a fellow bogger, Am I Shouting Yet? The pattern is called "Arkansas Cross Roads." Click on her links to see the super scrappy version, isn't her (she says from ugly fabric) quilt just beautiful? Now I have my pattern & gonna start making those four patches! Here's the block and a link to the pattern: This is a great one to just do a little bit on every time I sit down at my sewing machine. Found my pattern at Quilter's Cache.com.

What's on the machine? Well, a secret project, super cute, but has to be revealed later. Just finished up a couple of adorable burp cloths from my second love - embroidery! What do you think? I will be selling these with the baby's name for $22.00.

I am loving these and will be adding a "tigers tail" to the "I drool" bib for a little extra something.

The mommy-to-be loved her gift & the personalization makes it so special! Although it has been a while, I still remember how wonderful the burb cloths from my loving friends. Certainly a thoughtful gift and

I can assure you they saved my clothes more than once! She'll never go anywhere without your gift!

Scrap Challenge Adventure . . . Quilt on a Mission!

A couple of months or so ago I came across Fabric n' Quilts Scrap Quilt Challenge on Facebook. Since I had a scrap quilt in the works for quite some time and my scrap bins were literally bulging at the seams I decided, hey, why not enter the challenge. The quilt had to be completed by February 28th and I work really well under a deadline... so, game on!

Well, let me tell you ... it was a challenge! When I started I needed 22 more 12" pineapple blossom blocks to complete the center and still had to decide how to frame it. It has been fun, but also work!

Now, for an interesting wrinkle. While I was working on this I felt strongly impressed that this quilt is to be used to raise funds for a missionary friend who is about to return to Indonesia. End result... this is now a Quilt on a Mission and on March 30th some lucky person is going to win this gorgeous quilt and my friend, Christina, will have her much needed living expenses! (by the way, tickets are just $5 & you can let me know if you would like a ticket!)

Making time for sewing when you work in the quilting industry can sometimes be a real challenge... that is the #1 reason that my blog suffers from neglect - I grab every change I get to sew. I have block #7 of Patchwork Party '09 cut out almost pieced. It will be finished today & then back to the Scrap Quilt!

Looking back on last year, with all the customer work out of the house, sometimes it seems as if I didn't accomplish a whole lot... then I looked at the pictures.

Lone Star Quilt ... Restoration Project

Truly, this was the biggest quilting challenge that I worked on in 2010! A lone star block. The center was all I had to work with. It was authentic 1930's and was literally covered with tangled threads and in very poor repair... Some soul had decided to wash it and then folded it and put it away. It was entirely hand pieced and after working on it for a while discovered why it had never been completed. The only thing I'm sorry for is that I did not take a picture of it in it's pitiful beginning condition.

After clipping all those thread clumps, I took an evening and repaired every split seam.... This picture is after the top was assembled. I hated to do it, but I had to take my rotary cutter to it to straighten it up (as best as possible) and then sew it in. Truthfully, this went better than expected.

After it was all assembled I took it to the longarm and decided that because I knew it was going to have some waviness to use two layers of batting (thanks to a dear friend's advice :).... one of puff and another of warm & natural. This worked! You could literally see the batting filling in the slack as I went along. Hope you enjoy seeing the finished quilt with some close ups of the quilting. I am truly very proud of the finished work on this one and I understand the recipient of this beautiful gift was quite pleased!!

Like many of us, I am in total wonder & maybe a bit of shock that the last year has totally come and gone. Have I been busy? Oh, yeah! Discovered a new love - for embroidery - but still enjoying my 1st love of quilting . Still dreaming of combining the two into a stunning quilt design. Alas, so many quilts to make, so little time, or so it seems.

What's on your design wall? I just finished block 6 of the Patchwork Party Fall '09 quilt. It's gorgeous and yes, I am taking my time. Of course the last two months were a blur with no time for personal sewing.

Am also challenged by the Scrap Quilt Challenge to finish my scrap quilt that I started last year. Just did an inventory and I need 22 more blocks, so off to the scrap bin I go. With that many blocks to make I am SURE to make a dent in those ever populating scraps that I have so painstakingly cut and sorted!

Update ... only 16 more to go! How bout this French braid for the borders? I love the way it gobbles scrap!

Here's some pictures of things that I've made in the past few months. Will try to post only a few at a time. I had fun embroidering my gifts this year - but did some sewing & made an adorable quilted purse for my niece (which she loved!) If you don't know what to make for a 15 year old girl, I've got the perfect, simple (yes, super simple), but adorable project.

Is this adorable? The flap is removable so you can have a whole wardrobe of flaps! It also has fabulous pockets on the back and on the inside. I'm definitely making one for myself!

This is the snappy little bag I made for my niece... only 7 x 10 & oh so cute!

Duffle Bags ... these bags are HUGE & perfect for traveling!! My customer loves her bags so much, she keeps ordering more of them.... they make a fabulous personalized gift. Next one will be in Purple & Gold!

Is it really fall?

Looking at my blog I realized it has been almost 3 months since I last posted. Did I set out to go so long? No, I can assure you I had every intention of updating on at least a monthly basis, or more frequently. One of the hazards of getting older is that it seems they speed up time ... every day I rarely cease to be amazed at how fast the day flew by. Remember when you were a kid and the days just drug on and on and on?

Well, I can say one thing and that is I have been very busy! One very large accomplishment - and a few smaller ones.

Here's another baby quilt I made with Baby Einstein fabrics - just adorable! It was a gift & the parents just loved it. Again, the challenge is to make it 100% from my stash - which required a little creativity on the back, but the result is adorable!

I had a lot of fun piecing this quilt & it sure to be enjoyed by the little boy it was made for!

I have also been enjoying my embroidery machine - very, very much! It is fun & so creative.

There are soooo many things that you can create & decorate with embroidery... Like shirts....

I'm still going to make a couple more, plus a few other harvest related items before moving on to just Christmas, but it sure has been fun! The pillow covers are made "sham" style so that they can be removed, washed & easily stored for next season. Goal? Set of pillow covers for each season. Sure is fun & so easy to do!

Adventures in Quilting July 2010

Well, the past month has definitely been an adventure! If you had told me even six months ago that I could make a quilt in one week.... two quilts in less than two weeks I would have looked at you like you had tentacles coming out of your head. But, that is exactly what I did!

PRAYER WITHOUT CEASING

I wanted to make something for a friend for her birthday and was going to do something simple, like a table runner.. nice gift, right? Well, after praying about it I felt impressed that God wanted me to make her a prayer quilt. So... I found the perfect pattern. Just happened to have all the fabric in my stash (just happened to? there are certainly no coincidences with God!!) and ended up with this lovely quilt. It is called "Prayer Without Ceasing." Did she love it? Oh, yeah! It is a treasure and such a blessing.....

Where the Home Fires Burn

Well, God wasn't finished with me, I was contemplating what to give my dear husband for his birthday. Once again, God had some serious plans for me. Make him a quilt! What? I have less than a week!!. However, I was thinking about what to do with all these lovely, super organized strips I have, and found a great pattern on Quiltville for a scrappy bargello. Well, total scrappy is very hard for me to do - but between my stash & the 2.5" strip bin I had everything I needed to create the quilt. A friends stash (challenge - don't spend any $$) turned up the perfect backing and voila - a fabulous quilt. I amazed myself that I was able to literally complete this quilt in 4 days of sewing. Ok, I was seriously challenged, but found out I CAN do this! And, my stash is a little lighter. Oh, and my husband was absolutely ecstatic that I made a quilt FOR HIM! He travels a lot & this was just right for him to have a little "comfort" from home.

BABY CAMO??

On to the next challenge: A baby camo quilt! Well, my colorful, creative mind had a very difficult time wrapping baby and camo in the same sentence, let alone in a baby blankie.... Can anyone say S-T-R-E-T-C-H? So, I found a shop with lots of landscape and camo fabrics - but finding something suitable for baby.. well, I did find some nice fabrics & with the help of some creative friend's input was able to create this cute "Fence Rail Camo" quilt. It's not exactly camo, but it had the outdoors look & feel. The backing however, a great camo looking batik, was just perfect. So, the parents to be (and most importantly, the granparent's, a.k.a. the customer) were just delighted! Phew! Another challenge done!

Along with that, I did get to make something that just was a delight to make.... such a happy baby quilt! I fell in love with the Butterfly Fling panel & fabric collection the first time I saw it. It just sang out "little girl" and QUILT ME! I could just see those butterflies dancing on the fabric. When a customer asked me to make then a little girl "blankie" I practically jumped for joy! Not question what I was going to do - my stash had been waiting for the day....

Baby Butterfly Fling was born! Oh, this was an absolute delight & joy to make! It is definitely a happy quilt. The new mom seemed delighted as well! Truly, quilting is a labor of love! Even the challenges bring joy & delight!

and she sews beautifully! This is a Quilt of Valor that is finally finished and ready to ship back so that it can be given to a wounded soldier. Such a blessing to give something to someone who has laid his life down for our country!

I hope you enjoyed this brief tour of my studio. I've got a ways to go making "personal" but that will come with time. As you can see there is ample room for storage & other machines. I have a desk, and tables for my serger & embroidery machine also. Lots of creativity happening in the studio.

Adventures in Quilting ... the saga continues

Well, if you follow this blog you know now that it has been a very long while since I've posted an update....life took a right turn & has had me moving full steam ahead, with little time to do things like update blogs - but, it looks like life will now resume its more sedate pace, for which this quilter is thankful!

Will all that said, I've still been very busy in the quilting room! My studio is all but finished - pictures will be forthcoming and my new HandiQuilter Avante is all setup... Here's some of what I've worked on in the past few months . . .

This is an original creation that I had an idea for and just absolutely love! The colors are so cheerful & bright. this now graces my kitchen table and I tell you, it makes me smile every morning. The corner blocks are part of "Margaret's Insanity." Yes, I really went insane when I chose this design. I wanted to practice template work... well, with 54 pieces in each 9" block - I think I got my practice in!! Here's an up close of the quilting on the sunflowers & the rooster. Loved quilting the roosters tail!!

Here's a Quilt of Valor that I finished. I loved doing this because it was made by two girl scout troops. Being a former girl scout myself it was very special for me to be privileged to quilt this! Didn't the girls do a great job with the piecing?

Over the past few months I've spent quite a bit of time taking care of these two precious babies. Tommy on the left & Mike on the right. They're about 9 months in this photo... we have so much fun together. My great-nephews are truly miracle boys! Life is sweet!

I enjoyed quilting this one for a customer. This is her second quilt & she did a fabulous job piecing it.

I really enjoyed quilting it and am quite pleased, as is she with the quilting...

Here's a memory quilt that I made for a customer. I just absolutely love the way it turned out. It was for her son's graduation gift. Is this special or what? I truly enjoy making this type quilt. Super fun!!

and lastly....

I had the opportunity to take a piecing class from DeLoa Jones. This is her original pattern called "Rose Log Cabin." It still needs a couple of borders, but is lovely just as it is. I never realized that a day at a class could be like a mini-retreat! Especially when you're doing something you love & surrounded by folks who share your passion. Such a total blessing.

Well, this is certainly not everything I've done in five months, but at least partly catches me up....

So, now I am back off to continue my Adventures in Quilting....

Quilters Accontability

Well, last week's goal was to get the borders on the Bella Rosa quilt & quilt two tops. End result... finished the baby quilt on the longarm, only lacks binding, but can't add the binding till I finish Bella Rosa. Status? Last border is cut and one side attached. There are 4 borders and only the last one remains. This is one of my least favorite tasks, especially for a quilt this large, so setting the goals and not allowing myself to proceed with anything else till it's done is what it takes to finish..... Okay, so it is Monday. The backing for Homestead Hydrangeas (my oldest UFO) is loaded on Maxine... well, nearly, anyway - closest it's ever been to actually being completed. LOL!

So, for this week:

1. Finish Bella Rosa AND piece the backing so that it is ready for the longarm.... it can't be quilted right now as Maxine's new home is on hold for a couple of months.

Happy New Year!

When I look at my blog, I realize how much has happened since my last post. Of course, I hardly stopped to breathe during the last two months! My how the time does fly!!! On the other side of that coin I can look at how much I have accomplished during this time. So, my "blog-neglect" has been worth it! Truthfully, housework & PC went out the window - pared down to essentials - like food, which my hubby certainly appreciated... LOL!

Looking back - I finished 8 table runners, a table topper for Thanksgiving & completed 3 quilts. One t-shirt memory quilt as a sample, helped a friend make & complete a t-shirt quilt for Christmas and quilted it for her - it's a monster - finished king size! And the best part of all - I finished my Foolish Goose Tracks "Block-of-the-Month" Queen sized quilt for my son. It was his Christmas gift and was on his bed the same day. It is beautiful & he says he really loves sleeping under it! Oh, I nearly forgot .... I also played with my scraps and made three journal covers. They were SO much fun! I definitely plan to make more of those in the future.

If you click on the detail you might be able to see the fleur de lis quilting & echoes in the purple, gold & white calico.... just a perfect fabric for my LSU theme!

And this is the last one for 2009.... a gift for a dear friend... guess there are others too, now that I think about ... LOL! I was a prolific table runner maker for a season! It was nice to be able to give gifts that I had made for each of my dearest friends & family members... What a blessing for me this year!

This is the Foolish Goose Tracks quit completely finished. The quilting work came out just fabulous if I must say so myself!! I love this quilt and was quite a feeling of accomplishment when the last of the binding was stitched down!

The images below are detail of some of the machine quilting.... took me a couple of day of hard work, but what a great feeling!

Okay.... I've been keeping myself quite busy and finished a couple of projects. Since I must be about Christmas, the 1st thing I did when I came back from vacation was to finish my "Fit to be Tied" table topper by Pam Bono Designs.

I am very pleased with how my top turned out - it's very similar, except for the border & corners to the original color suggestions. I used some very different techniques that were quite complex, but by the end of the quilt were much easier. Don't you love the way the green looks like leaves?

Just before we left I finished piecing a memory quilt. This is my sample that I will use to make them. What a wonderful way to use all those special t-shirts & commemorate events... This one used 12 blocks & I can make them up to 20 blocks. This was made it with my son's shirts and focused only on his high school years & football.

Both of these items are next in line on the quiilting machine - as soon as I finish my next QOV.... here's a few pictures of the quilting on the last QOV I did... I machine quilt for QOV (Quilts of Valor). I really enjoy being a part of this program. Truly, I love the way the quilting work on this one... believe it was my best work yet!

You'll have to click on the images to really see the quilting.... I am pleased & so was the person I quilted it for... great feeling!

I used a King Tut red, cream & blue varigated thread - I really love the way King Tut sews & looks! However, I must say Maxine doesn't like it... but we're learning to get along :)

Okay, Maxine, as my longarm is affectionately known is loaded & waiting for me... one QOV down, then 2 (or 3, or 4) personal projects!!

Adventures in the Ozarks!

I will pause my adventures in quilting for a family reunion & some much needed R&R....

We spent the last week in the Ozarks traveling 1st for a family reunion in Stilwell, OK and then a little R&R .... in Eureka Springs, AR. Eureka is a unique town and had been nearly 20 years since I went that way. Interesting, because not much has changed. The only real bummer was that it rained, no poured, every day we were gone. When it wasn't pouring, it was misting and chilly. We also missed the glorious full fall foliage by one week... but can't control family reunions unless you're planning them - LOL!

The BIGGEST surprise were the gifts from my husband RW's family - he is better know as "Joe" amongst them. His sister-in-law, Jean, presented him with a photo album with pictures from the past 50 years or so. This was a huge gift that really touched his heart as he has very, very few pictures from his lifetime.

Here's his brother & two of his sisters - one didn't make it. They are Cherokee.

Joe was also given a nice gift basket from his sister with a print for our home & other goodies, plus some locally made beaded jewelry for myself.... but the piece de' resistance was a quilt that was made by his mother, more than 50 years ago. We both had tears in our eyes over this. It was an an answer to prayer! His sister, Katie, realized that we did not have one of "momma's quilts" and wanted us to have one. She let us choose - and this is the one we picked.... I just love it - and you can be sure, it may be old, but it will be used & loved as it has been already for many, many years!

This quilt is completely hand pieced - all little diamond shapes... the blocks that look white are actually fabric that has completely lost its color. Every piece (look between the stars to see the shape of the blocks) is the same one. Look how she finished the edges. It is a scrap quilt completely in the traditional sense. Joe's sisters were looking at it and remembering their dresses & "Granny's" dresses that it was made from. I can see a few men's shirts too.

It is hand quilted in the Baptist Fan design. Joe says that is how his mother quilted every one of her quilts. I'm not so sure about that, but I do know that was her favorite quilting design. Interestingly enough - she apparently did NOT like hand stitching down the binding, so it is machine sewn.... Well, we have good company there! Except for a few tatters here & there, the quilt is soft cuddly and in incredibly good shape.

Now, we're heading down the road & ended at this charming B&B... fabulous breakfast!

Here's a little bit of my story. I actually lived just north of Eureka Springs, Arkansas for about 2.5 years, about 20 years ago. I actually worked in Eureka at a little bitty hospital that is still there and has not changed at all... Can't grow, no place for it to go - but it does serve a need in the community.

It was lovely to be in Eureka in spite of the downpour & constant misty rain. Highlight of the trip? Couples massage at the Cresent Hotel & then gourmet Mexican dinner.... absolutely incredible!

Working on some new & exciting things - Have the 1st block done in the Pam Bono "Fit to Be Tied" table topper....It's gorgeous, but man it's a lot of piecing. Okay, had to stop to piece a T-Shirt Quilt and help a friend do the same....know anyone who would like a memory quilt? Pic SOON! Will post when done. Have to say it's just looking fabulous!

Adventures in Quilting

You might find it funny for me to say "adventures" in quilting... but truly it is an adventure - and there seems to never be a dull moment... from watching a quilting pattern unfold on the longarm to piecing adventures.... well.... okay.....

See this beautiful quilt top - this is the center of the quilt (sans borders 2 & 3, that is).... I have been working on this quilt since the beginning of the year - it's called Foolish Goose Tracks. I am thrilled to say that I have FINALLY completed this quilt top - now it waits for the studio so it can be quilted.... Okay, back to my story.... well, I held this quilt up a couple of months ago and what I saw - I couldn't believe - I had sewn an entire diagonal row in upside down! Oh no! Okay - so I have to admit, this really bummed me out - so it sat for a while... looking at me - with a glaring error until one night I said "enough" and began my frogging adventure.... and you're not going to believe this - but I managed to sew the entire row in, again, upside down.... so a frogging we go - but this time, I'm a woman on a mission.... and voila! The fixed quilt.... It is a thing of beauty isn't it.... and so below is the finished quilt top... well, as much of it as I could take a picture of until I can get the guys to hold it up for me again.... (I still managed to sew the borders on upside down and had to remove & redo... ah, well... this is a mark of the patience that has grown in me over the years!!)

Aren't the borders just magnificent? This is such an accomplishment for me and I cannot tell you how happy I am to have this finished. I had to make a deal with myself that I could not start my next piecing project until this was done.... I have to admit I was getting bored with the borders, but they were SO worth it!

So what else have I been working on? Well, I have been quite busy.... Like I said, I had to make deals with myself to make progress on Foolish Goose Tracks - which sure fooled me more than once....

Finished this sweet little baby pinwheel quilt - down to the tags... Don't ask me why, but my tags were a huge hold up for me... I wanted them to look a certain way - and I agonized over them - and finally, I created what I wanted. I am quite pleased with the finished result.
FYI - This quilt is now blessing my newest great-niece Madeline, born September 2nd! Isn't she absolutely beautiful... Don't think I've ever seen a more content & happy looking newborn!!

What else??? A pile of table runners! This will mostly be given as gifts - in fact one goes out the door for a wedding gift this weekend. These have been fun - quick easy - took no time to quilt on the longarm (did them two at a time).... and there will be a very large pile of them by Christmas!

In the meantime, I'm having so much fun making these!! All they lack is the binding. Today is binding day.... I will have the binding cut & sewn on at least one today... after all one is a gift that must be completed right away. So, again, for me, it's "let's make a deal" time - a deal with myself. I have to put binding on at least one so I can work on my next project.... Something for our home that will grace the kitchen table this fall.

This design is "Fit to be Tied" from Pam Bono [Click here to check out Pam Bonos website]... It will certainly be a challenge for me... Looks large doesn't it? Well, here's the pieces, which I did cut out (making deals with self - LOL) ... It's lots & lots of little pieces.... but will be so much fun! After I cut out ALL the binding & get it ready, then sew it on at least one table runner - if not all, then I can give myself permission to start it. Actually, I kind of like it when I complete stuff and feel like I have a clean slate... so, it might be tomorrow before the fun of piecing begins. Can't wait to show off the finished table topper - gracing my table, of course!

Check out this beautiful new Block of the Month. I just love the colors of the fabric called "Green Peace" which is of course by Moda. This is way too much applique for me, but it is beautiful!

Baby Boom

I have been quilting for a while and suddenly finished up several quilts, which felt extremely good.... Here's the latest I have been working on.....

These are called "Stars are Born" - they are quilts made my new identical great nephews.... I'll post pics of the babies soon. Their names are Mike & Tommy. Mike weighs 2.5 lbs & Tommy weight 1.5 lbs. They are both doing absolutely incredible! God is SO good!

The quilt below is a Block of the Month that I have worked on for over a year. I did some extensive quilting on it - it was certainly a challenge quilt, but I am proud to be hanging it on my living room wall.

I will post a finished picture soon - when it is hanging on the living room wall - the quilting work just came out gorgeous - if I must say so myself... here's a preview:

The finished pic will come soon.... cause I'm buying the rod this weekend!! It's finished & I really want to say "It is done!" This pattern was awesome and is available from Debbie Mumm online in the project archives. Just fell in love with this one!

Lastly, another baby quilt that is only lacking the binding, which is made, just needs to be sewed on. Thought I 'd have that done by now, but life being what it is .... I spent the middle of my day entertaining my great niece so that I could give the mom's of the twins a break... (the babies won't come home till late October, but mom is healing).... it was fun!

This quilt was fun & easy.... is called Baby Pinwheels. I just love the Prarie Points inner border! The pattern for this one can be found at www.modabakeshop.com.

There will be more to come. My next project is to complete my 2009 BOM called Foolish Goose Tracks.... only the outer pieced border left to do - it will get quilting in November when my studio is complete.
